Finding a puppy during COVID

As you’re probably discovering right now, their aren’t many puppies available. Whilst there is a shortage, its important to remember not to buy just any puppy you can find because you are desperate.

Remember the following:

Ask to see proof of health testing of parents, this is not just a general vet check. (See our files of what to look for test wise) For Staffords L-2-HGA is a very real disease and devastating for the family and life ending for the dog. This link is to an affected dog and its hard to watch but buying a pup from untested parents this is a very real possibility https://youtu.be/23i40P92cfI

Puppies should not be sent to their homes until after 8 weeks of age

The price range of puppies is generally $1800 to $2500 for staffords & $3000 to $3500 for mini bulls. If you see a breeder charging more (or less) you need to do your research as to why. If you choose to pay above (or below) the range that is totally up to you, but its important to know what the average is.

Scammers – They are always around but in challenging times more come out of the woodwork.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers cannot be shipped on any domestic airline in cargo. Some airlines also ban Miniature Bull Terriers. Most breeders expect you to come collect your puppy in person and it is not expensive to fly home with your pup in cabin in a Sherpa, please consider this as part of your initial costs of obtaining your puppy.

Right now we aren’t seeing litters posted as breeders already have many many inquiries. Our best recommendation, is to utilize the SBTCA or the MBTCA breeder directories. Find a breeder that has a breeding & puppy rearing philosophy that meets your requirements and build a relationship with them to get a future puppy. The average timing for females to come in heat is 6-10 months, some longer some sooner, so be prepared for a bit of a wait.

If you have managed to snag yourself a puppy recently, congrats! Whilst you are probably home all the time right now, please remember to continue to crate train your puppy and make sure they get some alone time each day. This will help you in your transition back to normal work/life when that happens and may hopefully help with any anxiety your pup will have when you aren’t around all of the time.
Stay Safe Everyone.
